I just watched one of my favorite movies ever, The Virgin Machine, for the umpteenth time. What can I say, I still love it just like the first time I saw it. I'm so thankful to Netflix for carrying it. And of course you should all see it. Go to your Netflix accounts and put it on your queues... like, now!
Of course, as with every truly gorgeous film, it is completely impossible to explain what's so marvelous about it. I'll just throw you some bones.
First of all, the plot, in one sentence: German girl from Hamburg goes to San Francisco in search of her lost mother and the meaning of love, and goes gay.
The film was published in 1988 and is very, very artsy. It's in tinted black and white and looks a lot like a silent movie. Many of the actors don't seem to be professionals or at least sound as if they were reading their lines from a script. Gorgeous music by Laibach, Mona Mur (German new-wave/goth singer) and some others I don't remember. Many strange and colorful characters.
Some lines:
- "Germans are always so grumpy."
- "You can't buy those tits in a store."
- "I always keep my sex toys very clean."
- "You make me meschugge talking in that Deutsch."
As I said, very hard to describe. But somehow I think quite a few people on SG might like it. It has a somewhat similar spirit.
Enough fan-boy babbling! Go rent it - or don't. It's up to you.
Edit: Oh, and if you do see it, let me know what you think. I've read some critics online that weren't very enthusiastic, so obviously, to some people it seemed pretty incoherent and even pointless. I guess I like that in movies, though. Tampopo, my other all-time favorite, is very similar in that respect.

You can tell me which SG you want, and specify which set you'd like me to work from. If there's a specific picture you'd like me to draw you can ask, but I can't guarantee it.
