So my week off is going OK.
I had lunch with my old boss and with my old landlord, both of whom are retired now.
I am watching a lot of the West Wing (I bought the third season and rented the first two). It's such a good program - I probably like it more than Buffy, but that could just be because I've watched so much of it in the last five days. If I sit down with a whole bunch of Buffy I'm sure I'll like Buffy more afterwards.
It's gone really downhill since team Sorkin vacated, however. Three weeks ago, they managed to make a mideast peace conference agonizingly dull. I am only still watching because they have to eliminate almost the entire cast this season to make way for the new administration, and I want to see how they do it.
On Tuesday I met with some friends at a bar. It was busy so I had to sit at the next table, where I was joined by three Japanese businessmen. Despite the language barrier (everything had to be said about three times) we had a very interesting chat. At any rate, there was alots of "Cheers to Canada!" "Cheers to Japan!"
And regular readers of my journal may remember my plan to write some academic essays. I have actually begun doing so! My first topic relates to problems in administrating "armed forces" testamentary documents in a 'post 9/11' world. The second posits that the 'Clarity Act' (which purports to require a clear question in a referendum held by a province wishing to secede from Canada) is in fact unconstitutional. For the second, mainly I'm looking for sources which have the same take on it that I do - because if there aren't any, and if I'm not completely wrong due to something I haven't thought of, then it might be publishable (fingers crossed, but I mean really, yeah right. If indeed I'm on the right track, then someone's probably thought of it long before now).

He won't wrong me. I've known him for 25 years. He's always beaten himself up over things like calling to cancel plans. I doubt he'd have it in himself to hurt me. He offers the most sincere apologies I've ever heard.
