I saw The Amazing Spider-Man today, and in my opinion, it lived up to it's title. Here is the short review I wrote on Flixster:
I absolutely loved this movie! Growing up I read Spider-Man every week for about ten years. When Ultimate Spider-Man came out I read that the first couple years. This movie takes elements from the old Lee/Kirby stories and the Ultimate-verse. The thing about this movie to me is that this feels like a true Spider-Man film. You have the web shooters, the classic villain, and best of all, Gwen Stacy. She always should have been in the movies because she was Peter Parker's first and true love. The chemistry between those two worked so well in this movie. It saddens me to think what might happened in the follow up movies. Also, I love the little things in this movie. You never see him, but you can feel Norman Osborn's shadow over everything. Oscorp is a major corporation in this movie (like Wayne Enterprises in the Batman movies). The use of the web shooters and the webbing were great. I laughed out loud and clapped when Lizard is talking and Spider-Man shoots him in the mouth with the webbing to shut him up. And for the first time really, we get the goofy Spider-Man. What always made him fun were the wise cracks and acrobatic moves when takin on the bad guys, and there is a lot of that. And, in my opinion, everyone is perfectly casted. The only things I didn't like was the background story of Peter's parents (even though this could be a huge deal later on), and some of the special effects were subpar because of stupid 3D (I watched the 2D version because I'm not a fan of 3D). This movie has me stoked for a sequel, which they are currently working on. I hope they set up the Osborn's in the next one with a proper Green Goblin at the end of the next one or the third. Maybe even get a Sinister Six movie.
