As promised, a blog about the weekend. Saturday started kinda crazy. I woke up early so that I could go to Spoonful Records for Record Store Day. The store was set to open at 9 AM so I figured I would get there an hour early. Little did I know how many people would show up. There had to be at least a hundred. The line was wrapping around the block and going pretty far down the alley. Fortunately the owner is smart and decided to go ahead and open the store. I got lucky and was about to get just about all the albums that I wanted. Here's my stash:
The Dazed and Confused Soundtrack (never on vinyl and limited to 5000 copies)
The White Stripes 10th Anniversary Edition of Elephant
A couple of singles including David Bowie, The Lonely Island, and Cake
My free RSD 2013 bag
Later that morning I decided to go checkout Rob Zombie's new film The Lords of Salem. I went into this really hoping to enjoy it. I loved the other Zombie films, especially The Devil's Rejects and Halloween. I want to believe that someday he could really become a great filmmaker. The Lords of Salem had some great visual shots which is why I have hope for him. Overall though, I didn't like this movie. It seems at times that he was just going for some cheap horror tricks (if there wasn't a booming sound at the theater I probably never would have jumped). Also, the movie is just weird at times. Now I did read in an interview that this film is his homage to the old Italian horror films. The Italian horror films that I have seen I haven't enjoyed. It just isn't my genre. On that note, I feel like it is hard for me to give an honest review. At times I felt like I was watching a straight to DVD B-horror film, but I also understand that this movie was made on a very low budget. It does have its moments. I thought Sherri Moon Zombie did a great job. There are a lot of naked women. And as I said before, Rob Zombie has seem really beautifully shot scenes. I am hoping whatever movie his does next has a bigger budget and really gets some support. I do want to see him succeed and keep making movies.
Pretty much the rest of my Saturday was spent at Fourth Street Bar for the Brew Kettle Pub Takeover and watching the Crew play Chicago. Sunday went fairly well. I went out to Brothers Drake Meadery and decided to make Sunday a Bloody Mary day.
The Bloody Mary from Brothers Drake with a shot of Hot Shot spicy mead and hand stuffed olives
After brunch I decided to just walk up High St through the Short North. I made a pit stop at Da Levee for their Blood of Mary. It's a Bloody Mary that is roux based. Very different, but really good.
I then went to Barley's for a couple of beers and headed home. Overall a good weekend of going out, even though I was by myself. I think next year I will save up some money and check out Hell City. It looked like most of the SG community was attending. There was some drama this past weekend but I don't really feel like talking about it right now.
On a side note, this Sunday I will be walking in The March of Dimes. It's one of the only charities that I really try to raise money. If you would like to donate, here is the link to my page.
