Logan Spoiler free review
Nature made him a freak, man made him a weapon, and she made him human (or something else or the last bit like “Logan gave him a family”)
In 1999 there was a very minor event that happens often changed the course of cinema. Actor Dougray Scott was originally cast as the “Wolverine” but due to a scheduling conflict had to drop the role. Thus the search for a new actor started and a man only known for his theater roles in plays is found and is given the part his name is Hugh Jackman. After 17 years and 7 movies Hugh Jackman reprises his most iconic role and puts the claws back on for one final time.
Logan is set in a not too distant future of 2029 where mutants have almost completely vanished. It starts with an old and warn down Logan, who has become a simple limo driver to try to scrap together a living, trying to take care of a mentally deteriorating, and aged, Professor X, played by Sir Patrick Stewart, with help from another mutant Caliban (Stephen Merchant). Until a young mutant named Laura is thrusted into their care and Logan must become a protector and guardian for one more lost mutant who is running. That is the part where the real story of the movie comes in, and where the real movie begins. *
Unlike most movies that come out today, and almost all the superhero movies before it, this movie is grime dark and gritty and is grounded in reality making a world that is not all that different from our own. That gives for a type of tone and feeling that we haven’t seen since the dark knight trilogy, but it still manages to feel and be distinctly different from (and arguable better then) Christopher Nolan’s iconic series. However it’s dark and grim tone openly and interestingly contrast the very lighthearted and happy MCU’s tone. Despite the tone and setting of the movie it is not all sad and dark with moments of the films main themes, like family, shining through to give you hope while also acting as a beacon and lighthouse guiding you through the even darkest moments. The movie is also able to have much needed lighter moments that not just give you time to laugh but also to connect and understand the characters that are on this journey.
Magnificently, Mangold has managed to give people who look a little bit deeper into the film and certain scenes a different outlook compared to people who just see things at face value. What I mean be this is there are parts in the movie the at face value are funny, but if you think about it then become very very sad and moments that are dark all of a sudden has a little bit more light and some more hope than at first glance. This is also something they kept up with the trailers allowing you to watch the movie and then rewatch the trailers and go “ooooohhhhh ok” during them. they manage to do it in “Hurt” trailer (with Johnny Cash’s song “Hurt”) or the super bowl trailer (where they used “Amazing Grace”) by not just use iconic songs that go with the tone of the movie, but also got the scenes they used to match what the song was saying. It is a movie that is extremely well done that I feel I will be noticing new things that the cast a crew did for many, many, views to come.
The cast is perfect in this movie with old war horse of the franchise Hugh Jackman and Sir Patrick Steward helping to develop the new and younger members of the cast like Dafne Keen who is Laura. The chemistry and clear bond they all share is easy to see on screen with how they all interact and talk to one another. For this role Patrick Stewart lost 20 pounds to help him play the role and it is clear during the film that he cared about the outcome. However, that is nothing compared to Hugh Jackman’s clear dedication to the role. It is clear that Hugh Jackman didn’t just want to put out another X-Men movie but the best movie he could between what he did to get in shape for the role, but also how plain it is to see his pure dedication shine through the entire movie.
*(might put this there not sure) during the entire journey there are so many conflicts happening within Logan himself, from him trying to live with everything he has done to how he should act and who he should be, that I feared they wouldn’t seem resolved by the end and while they may not have been he had made peace with them.
