I created a Mastodon server with the idea of it being more science oriented (but that isn't a requirement, just a emphasis - anyone can join):

https://madscientists.social

Right now anything goes (as long as it doesn't draw legal attention).

If anyone wants to help out let me know.

Would anyone, besides me, like to see a Mastodon instance that puts the focus on science?

I often wonder how much we can trust cloud providers. We know that Google reads our email: "

  • Google may transfer, store and process Customer Data in the United States or any other country in which Google or its agents maintain facilities. By using the Services, Customer consents to this transfer, processing and storage of Customer Data."

as well as looking for copyright data...

User's aren't customers, user aren't even products, user's are data sources. User's behavior and habits are the product. The product is sold to their customers (businesses) so those businesses can leverage that information (the habits of the users) in order to know who to target for which type of advertisement. That's it. It's not a conspiracy, it's capitalism. We can trust them to do the things that increase their profit. If you are their customer (a business) you can trust them. They give their customers ways to protect data, encrypt it, and back it up. Their customers data is very important to protect, because their customers pay them. Their users don't pay them, they get services in exchange for information about their habits. Install a pi-hole on your network. Disable tracking cookies. Don't use google Chrome.

Over the past few weeks I've been trying out the different types of Traffic Shaping (QoS) in pfsense and so far I have not found exactly what I want.

The best I have done so far is with PRIQ. The other options (HFSC, CBQ, etc.) want to dedicate portions of the bandwidth to the different queues.

What I really want is to have the full...

I found a new configuration that seems to work better. Use HFSC, go through the wizard but don't check any of the boxes. Once the wizard is finished go look at the qLink on the LAN side and enable "Codel Active Queue" (do this for all LAN-facing interfaces) and the on WAN look at qDefault and also enable "Codel Active Queue" there as well.

With this new configuration, if nobody else is on the 'net I can hit the > 900Mbit/s speed test.

So after fighting with various versions of xorg and wayland on a couple of headless machines (graphics card, but no monitor attached), I finally gave in and bought a couple of those fake monitor plugs (I bought one for DP and one for HDMI). I should have done that long ago! It worked on the first try and has been working for a few days...

I had the idea to make a bot that bought/sold stock and/or crypto but it seems like all of the exchanges either 1) do not allow multiple trades in a day; and 2) do not allow fractional purchases (i.e. you have to buy a whole bitcoin or a whole stock). So I guess that idea is on-hold until I actually have money...

We bought a Cricut Maker 3. This has to be the coolest thing I've bought for projects since I bought a 3D printer! Too bad I don't have the 3D printer anymore... anyway there are so many cool things we can make! We made names for the kids' lettered piggy banks for Christmas. Next up we're going to make named coffee/tea/hot coco cups!

I recently stubled on nVidia's GeForce Now streaming service. It allows you to play many steam, Epic, and uplay (or whatever it's called now) games on a remote PC with nVidia graphics (including RTX) and stream it to your local device (PC, phone, tablet, etc.)

Holy shit this is so fucking cool! Where has this been my whole life?

I can now play Star Trek...
