Something that terrifies me is the idea that when I die, here is nothing but blackness, yet I'm still conscious, meaning that I will be cognizant of being trapped in nothingness for eternity. Maybe it is just a fear of oblivion. Similarly, I'm uncomfortable that the Earth is alone in the infinite universe. I'm much more comfortable with the idea that there are other life forms out there. The Lars von Trier end of the world film Melancholia really got to me, especially this haunting line: "That I know things. And when I say we're alone, we're alone. Life is only on earth, and not for long." PS I'm also afraid of snakes.
