Just the other day I remembered something from my childhood. I rememberd being in 5th grade. I never had all that many friends when I was younger, just as I don't today. But I always had enough to keep me busy, same as today. But in the 5th grade (I was 10) I had this friend named David. He was just as geeky as I was but he actually looked like it. I never really looked like a geek. I just thought and acted like one. During our recess and lunch time while the other kids would play games and such, we would sit at a table and draw up mazes. Extremely complex ones usually much more complecated than what you'd see in a newspaper or tv guide or whatever.

At first thought that seems pretty god damn geeky. Sitting and drawing mazes during rather than playing dodgeball. But if you think about what all it takes to actually make a complex maze it's at least an order of magnitude geekier. Because if you think it is kindo hard to solve a maze, imagine what it took to design and draw it up. Before you ever get started you have to have it solved already. Then you have to solve it numerous other times and cut those solutions short. And you have to figure what solutions the person solving it is likely to want to take and make those the dead ends. And you can't just draw the solutions out and draw in the walls around them and erase the solutions, it will show up. You have to project them down mentaly and draw out all the walls as they will be. And of course it all has to be done right the first time because any erased mistakes will show up and it'll look like hell.

Before all that, of course, you have to decide which type of maze you want it to be. Be it a simple square one, round one, trapazoidal, a polygon type or whatever. Each shape has to have paths and solutions that compliment the shape. The solution can't be a product of the shape or it will be very easy to solve. The solution has to actually be a shape itself entirely different than the shape of the maze. While it's a subconsious thing and something that you don't think about, that's entirely how mazes are intended to be solved, subconsiously.

While the more geeky of you reading this might read all that and say "well yea, how else would you do it?" many people may not have thought of it until I mentioned it. What's more, the people reaing this are all adults. When I was at work and remembered that I did all that back when I was but a little kid I thought to myself "good god man, you were a serious fuckin dork weren't you?"
