Why the fuckery?
Because fuck.
Yeah, I can't say I'm Backstreet Boys #1 fan or anything, they can sometimes be earnest in ways that seem somewhat artificial. But some of their songs have been well-crafted pop songs, in both the ballads and uptempo tracks. But I'm a sucker for a good ballad by any band- I've liked several of theirs, and really loved the new track Incomplete when I happened to catch them perform it on Ellen DeGeneres' daytime talk show recently (I can't get it out of my head). I thought it was a great song; I really liked the melody and thought the lyrics were fantastic- just hearing A.J. sing the first few lines that start the song had me hooked. The line "I'm awake but my world is half asleep" is really an astute observation if you think about it. It's funny though, when they performed it Nick Carter was being a bit over the top with the dramatics, falling to his knees as he sung his verse. So when they finished, Ellen ran over and fell to her knees (in essence, playfully mocking him), so in response the rest of them immediately fell to their knees right next to her as she threw to a commercial break. They may be a "boy band", but labels or "scenes" (or even musical genres) associated with a particular artist don't really have any effect on whther or not I like their music.
That said, as far as "boy bands" go, I prefer N'SYNC. And I think Justin Timberlake's Justified album is excellent- and also really like that music video for the Cry Me A River single.
