SNL is one of my favouruite shows and the writers never get enough credit.
it was truly an interesting read.

Just seen the film and I don't really know how I feel about it. I think I think it's a great film but I don't know. I will watch it again. It's handled well...............tough sort of subject matter. Would be easy to be flippant about the casts performances, easy to highlight "Little Red Ridinghood"'s performance. The violence? Vickie's sexuality, Kyra Sedgwick's pulling power?

Should you see it? Yes. Is it upsetting? I'd say no, it's too clever for that. Will it be overlooked? Probably.

I would just add that it ends on the absolute perfect beat.

I'm looking forward to seeing this film, partly because I'm curious to see how Shylock is presented (sympathetic vs. total heel) and partly because I had heard about the Antonio/Bassanio gay angle and am interested to see how that's done, and whether it detracts from the film's trueness to the original text or not. I like some of the Shakespeare adaptations that experiment with the texts, like the Richard III w/ Ian McKellan, but I much prefer the films to stay true to the text. Zeffereli's Romeo and Juliet was awesome, and I have also enjoyed several of Kenneth Branagh's films, especially Henry V.

Regardng the anti-semitism of the play, it is anti-Semitic in a modern context - Shylock is basically forced to convert to Christianity, and is really presented as a nasty human being - but in the context of its time, it was probably pretty groundbreaking because you get at least a hint of what Jewish people of the time went through as far as mistreatment, and how someone like Shylock might become embittered against Christians. Shakespeare was ahead of his time in a lot of ways - it's never overt, but you can see strains of an anti-war sentiment, or at least a less deluded outlook toward the reality of war, in Henry V, and King Lear deals with insanity in a way that was a lot more complex and contemplative than most playwrights of his time.

I stumbled across Eon's work when doing research for acutal quality and stylistic porn flim posters and video box art (for design ideas). First time I think I have ever really gotten excited over porno artwork and film design. Great stuff and Im so glad he is changing the bar for this medium.

Hey; I wasn't sure- in the comment section it had her as writing the intro, but maybe it just does that by default. Are you a Gaiman fan? I was into comics pretty hardcore in junior high and high school till around age 16 or so, and Sandman was always my favorite. I've been meaning to get Sandman: Endless Nights, but I've been trying to catch up with a billion things in my life for a very long time, and have made progress (but slowly... blame it on my Attention-Deficit Disorder) so I still have yet to do so. I haven't really gotten back into reading anything since my comics days (outside of my college years, of course). By the time I finished HS and started at NYU film school, I wasn't reading comics anymore comics despite my interest in writers like Neil Gaiman, Alan Moore, Grant Morrison, etc. (wow I think those 3 are all British, funny- maybe the Brits write better comics/grahic novels). And from a personal script writing/filmmaking standpoint, my stuff has always been pretty far from the fantasy realm, and I haven't really bothered to see any of the comic book/fantasy movies of the last few years, including the Spider-Man, Daredevil, and X-Men movies (despite the fact that the X-Men films were directed by Bryan Singer, who used to be a friend of mine- have you interviewed him?) Bryan has a great film director's eye, but I knew him back in the days he was still making films like 'The Usual Suspects', and a small independent film that was his debut feature called "Public Access", both written by Christopher McQuarrie. As someone who interviews media personalities promoting their current work, I'm sure you see and hear most of what's in the public eye at the moment, but as for me, since I've become a bit saturated with Hollywood bullshit (even when it may have some merit- simply because I've just become bored with the typically bland and derivative nature of most of the material), I've really only seen a handful of films in the last few years- many of them foriegn. But I've still managed to build up a small collection of DVDs that I've yet to watch (less than 25; I'm sure you have hundreds) and keep track of what I want to eventually get with my Amazon.com wishlist. Anyway, I haven'read Neil Gaiman's books but am aware of them; I've read his blog a few times on his site.
