Last night Megan and I tried to study for our qual and discovered that we didn't know how to do calculus, really, so we went down to the library and checked out some really basic books. They were so helpful and full of examples compared to the notes we had from our classes last year. Our notes accompanied the class quite well, but you can't really actually learn anything from them. They're far too technical and contain exactly zero examples. And the qual is all examples! So we photocopied like, 50 pages from this one book and made packets so we could practice doing weird integrals and max/min multivariable crap. The next thing we have to learn all over again is the Jacobian for the linear change of variables, and... change of variables. We had this one test last year where the study sheet said at one point "there is a very good chance that you will be asked about details of the proof of Stokes' theorem" and when we took the test that basically amounted to "prove Stokes' theorem" which takes a long time. At least there will be none of that. I can do this; it's easier than anything from real analysis.

I'm not being a perv or condescending. So beautiful, interesting, smart, and the corsets.
Have a swell day.
