What part of being an adult were you absolutely not prepared for?

Hey SG Family!

It’s been a while since I’ve sat down and wrote a blog homework, but this topic got me thinking a lot.

What part of being an adult were you absolutely not prepared for? So many things came to mind, some sad and some funny.

I think one of the biggest ones that I was never prepared for is that life can just change in an instant. Not gradually, not at ease, but abrupt and unforgiving. One day you can be at the pub laughing with your friend, and the next day they can die. The sheer unpredictability of life was something I was never prepared for nor rehearsed in. This comes hand in hand with my anxiety and constantly wanting to control my future, but some things we just can’t predict and can’t change. I learnt this lesson early in life when my cousin died in her sleep. One minute everything was fine and by the morning she was gone. At 16. Since then I’ve learnt to forgive often and maybe that’s why I seem to get walked over so often too, but that’s just how I am and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’ll always be the first to apologize and the last to hold a grudge because you never know when you’ll see that person again.

The strong yearning for my parents to take care of me when I’m really upset, or just really sick. Don’t get me wrong, friends and netflix are great company when you’re sick too, but I guess just realizing that you’re alone and no ones looking after you when you’re super sick is kind of sad. For example, when you’re a kid and you’re sick your parents or guardians take care of you and tuck you into bed, cook you homemade meals and all you have to focus on is getting better. When you get sick as an adult, you realize that there’s no one there to clean up after you, and most of the time you can’t even afford to be sick.

The fact that a lot of us are only one pay check away from being homeless. Back home, I was getting a decent pay and always had some savings in my account in case I had an unexpected bill or emergency, but since moving to Canada I’ve found it pretty hard to save (especially because the town I’m currently living in is damn expensive) but that means if I got seriously injured or super sick that I couldn’t work for 2 weeks - I’d have to try and borrow money or sell some belongings to pay my bills.

Finding out how to inspire, motivate and cheer yourself up as you grow into adulthood. As children, most of us get a great deal of encouragement and praise from our peers, teachers and family but I feel as we get older that diminishes. Being responsible for your own happiness is a big one, and sometimes it’s a lot easier to have a sulk and feel sorry for yourself when you’re having a bad time - but we have to perk up and continue on with our day.

Last and not least, (And I don’t even eat the stuff anymore) - The price of cheese. Seriously, what the fuck?

What’s something that you weren’t prepared for when you became an adult?

thank you @missy and @rambo

All my love,
Akiramai

I wasn't prepared for taking all of the responsibility. Realizing that it's just the choices I make, and how I decide to react to the results, that is what I am. Intentions don't mean shit, results speak for themselves.
