We met along the backroads on the way to Missoula,
Lookin' for a home and maybe a truelove,
Grabbed a double barreled shotgun and two cherry cokes,
Them fightin' words were all we spoke.
From Rattlesnake to Ithaca we hit every stateline,
Cracked every cashbox, we broke every gold mine,
Prayed petty cash would replenish our souls
And a runaway train would bring us home....

My mom's still at my place. It's nice to have her about. She's been spoiling me with dinners and such. I am ready to have my own space back though. I think she's going home tomorrow.
We are on strike, rotating strikes. Two offices on the east coast went out today. It's highly likely my office might be out tomorrow. And to clarify, I'm not...

Ah, Neko Case was brilliant!
I'll have to check out Veda Hille.
Wow! Lots of things going on! and I'm glad to hear that your Mom is doing well. I've been so busy with other things that I haven't had the time or inclination to drag myself over to a PC and interafce with all that is SG.
Take care of yourself - you are one of the good ones

I booked my tickets for LA for four days in February. *dances around* I wish it could be longer, but seeing as I have no vacation left 'til after March, I'm happy with four days.
I decided to finance the new computer after all. To that end, I ordered it tonight.
Within a week or so, Half-Life 2 will be mine, and I will be...

Have you run across a band called Hank Dogs? Worth a look at their album 'Bareback', if you notice it kicking about somewhere. Fragile North American-folk music, by Londoners I think.

How spoiled am I? My mom is coming over tomorrow to look at Dells with me. She's buying my sister a notebook for grad school, and wants to help me get another desktop. We'll likely go halfers on it, which means NO FINANCING!
I look around my apartment, and all the things I really like or use, my mom has bought for me as gifts....

How is winter settling in for you? It's snowing outside as I type this. The windows are frosty.
When you wrote that in my journal, I was spending my last full day of a week's vacation in Zihuatanejo, Mexico. I'd just returned from a more remote beach where I swam for 1 1/2 hours, took a boat ride through a lagoon while watching pelicans dive bomb for food, and ate a garlic-encrusted red snapper for lunch. A great time. I missed the snow that got dumped on Denver a couple days previously, while basking in the sunshine and enjoying the beach. (OK, I didn't enjoy the bites from the sand fleas, AKA the no-see-ums, the punkies. Otherwise I watched a glorious sunset or six.)
Back home, it's warming up, but the windows are still getting frosty in the mornings.
Off at the end of the month to Portland--not New York City. (Something got lost in translation on that one.)
These days, I like buying clothes that make me happy, too!

World AIDS Day is almost over. A few facts before it's gone for another year.
This year's focus was on HIV infection in women and girls. 47% of the world's HIV infections are female now. (source World Health Organization)

I don't know about Canada, but in some cities in the US, there are organizations that distribute free condoms and other safe-sex tools in high-risk places like gay bars, along with safe-sex/HIV awareness and education. There's an organization here in NYC called Scenarios that targets teens for AIDS education and awareness. If you want more info, let me know.
As for helping abroad, that's a tough one. I have two good freinds that spent the better part of the year in Haiti working towards AIDS awareness and prevention. It's such an uphill battle and really it's the private groups that are taking on the challenge. The US government has not exactly made it a priority. When the Bush Administration took over in 2001, they cut funding to any overseas religious-based aid group that advocated birth control. (Part of the wonderful "morality" of the Bush Administration, forcing their religious beliefs onto everyone else via exercising their political muscle, i.e holding the pursestrings... but I shouldn't get started!) Unfortunately, birth control is inherently linked to AIDS prevention. Thus, these groups had to cease distribution of condoms and their educational efforts in order to stay afloat. Another good friend of mine quit a high level position at Catholic Relief Services over this. It's really discouraging.

My cat catches mice. If I can get to them before they die, I make her drop them in a shoe box and then I take it to the park and set them free. But usually I'm not home when she catches them, or I'm asleep, and she brings them to me as a prize. Not the most humane solution, but at least it's the way of nature... Sort of.
So I just caught up on your journal anmd I'm glad to hear of your lovely weekend with surlyclown!

torihoney:
congrats on the resurrection of your rosie. as for mice, technically they are nasty little germ carriers, and overall, breed so profusely, you are merely thinning out the herd. Traps that keep them alive may seem more humane, but then i think if i were a mouse, i'd be pretty pissed if i was released miles away from my house, homeless and without resources. it might be more humane to have a bar snap down and not know you were going to get axed.
or maybe i'm just being snarky.

My computer, which is 5 years old and has had more upgrade operations than a Boca Raton matron, finally gave up the ghost last night. I've resurrected it, but I honestly don't know how much time I have. I've managed to transfer everything that's important to me, except I don't have any blank cds about to back up my mp3s.

A translation of the Tao Te Ching by a Taoist infatuated with the writing of Quentin Tarantino and David Mamet was recently brought to the attention of the members in the Taoism group, perhaps you'll appreciate it:
Example:
"20.
Don't spend too much time
thinking about stupid shit.
Why should you care
if people agree or disagree with you?
Why should you care
if others find you attractive or not?
Why should you care
about things that worry others?
Call bullshit on all that.
Let other people
get worked up
and try to enjoy themselves.
I'm not going to give myself away.
A baby doesn't know how to smile,
but it's still happy.
Let other people
get excited about stuff.
I'm not going to hang on to anything.
I'm not going to fill my mind with ideas.
I'm not going to get stuck in a rut,
tied down to any one place.
Other people are clever;
I guess I must be stupid.
Other people have goals;
I guess I must be aimless.
Like the wind. Or the waves.
I'm not like other people.
I'm getting right with Tao."

I find myself going through weeks of my life missing the clouds and only seeing fleeting shadows of things. Sometimes I look at stuff and find it hard to see where things begin and end, the definition of objects. I need to practice really seeing. Perhaps this is why I'm not an artist.
Maybe I'm naturally inclined more to be visual but still it comes and goes for me... not helped by staring at abstracted information on a computer screen every workday. When I remember to see again it's overwhelming and I don't always know what to do with it.
I wonder if you have a similar relationship with words?

dead sexy hella fun gorgeousness....hi. it's all over. thank god. ooooh, a boy visitor?
The movie tour was a lot of fun. Hopefully some of the pics will come out ok. I'm headed back to the mainland tomorrow night...on the red-eye, then into LAX at 6:20am. Then home...then probably a nap. Hopefully the flight won't be full and I can stretch out a bit.
I was walking the beach, with the crystal blue Pacific in front of me, just thinking how wonderful it would be if you were here with me, sharing in this amazing beauty.
Glad your mom is staying and you're enjoying it.
I miss you...still.
