I've engaged in a few public (peaceful and orderly) protests. In my opinion, they are a useful and necessary way of indication dissension from current policy or practice. Also, people sometimes think they are alone in an opposing opinion. Public protest gives people a sense of solidarity and confidence in having an opposing opinion or view. And, it helps keep those in power, for lack of a better word, honest. It reminds them that they are not dictating policy, but rather, serving the public.

I can imagine that for people in uniforms, like you (inferred from your groups ) and snafu1013, having to make sure that public protests stay safe and life for everyone else goes on, they must be a royal pain in the ass. Thanks for being there and making the effort to help people exercise their democratic rights. You guys kick ass.
