I read the rules online in the PDF format. in there picking an item token is free. they put up some cards for different difficulties, so I was going to see if there was something about special guns comming with ammo. I didn't see that but I did see the rule about it being free, and passing things to a buddy cost one.
I think that if you get a special weapon that it may not come with an ammo token, but if you want to risk the weapon itself you can lose the weapon if there is an ammo role.
