check out Zatooichi as well, by Takeshi Kitano... Hero has been out for a while I think but is now just getting an American release... ditto for Zatichi...

also, they're doing an American remake of Ju-On, which assuredly will translate WONDERFULLY to the peanut crunching american cinema screen w/ Sarah Michelle Gellhar starring in a film which doesn't even have a continual protatgonist...

I'm not so much into the Meiji period of film, or earlier, but rather, the modernisitc take on Japanese life... "Bright Future", "Maadadayo", "Casshern", "Better Luck Next Year", etc etc...

I think Kurosawa's films are epic, but I am fascinated by close interpersonal relationships more than epic sagas...

I find myself in a constant tizzy, translating Japanese films... so much is left out that you barely get the meaning at times... I'm no expert, but I do realise when certain terms, (and I suppose it's difficult for the translators), those terms, have difficult English translations... it's at least good to know the language of the film you are watching... I love Japanese... I love the cadence... I love listening to it... I love listening to it in films, and what is missed by others just reading the subtitles...

Chinese is far too hard!!! to many tonal stresses!!! ouch!!! at least Japanese only has but a few and not so mandatory vocal stressors... !
