I think that the way the video has been filmed has some subtle qualities reminiscent of the 80's, and I don't get the sense that the song and the video flow well together at all.
I agree with your thoughts that it certainly isn't her strongest work.
It is different and a little bit edgy, which does make it interesting. The objection seems have been to make the whole thing thought provoking, successfully done, but I do think that perhaps they tried a touch too hard or just weren't sure how many metaphors/symbolisms to pander to.
In addition to that - I think marketing may have succeeded in creating hype for a song that is generally quite below par. Everyone is talking about the video - we've all heard the song and have an opinion - but it's back to the video, right?
