Wanna see what a liar looks like?

Brilliant of NBC for shooting this waist-up instead of as a pair of sit-down headshots.

It's a good thing I have such a black sense of humor and an appreciation of the absurd.

If I wasn't able to just laugh my head off at Dubya, I'd pretty much live in constant horror at what the nitwit with the keys to the most powerful country on the planet is doing.

that honestly makes me want to vomit.

Imagine how delighted I was to find it looks just like it sounds.

I appreciate the advice. As much as I'd like to take it, I can't. Private message to explain the rest.

You know all those shitty novels about "memory" and "loss" and "the holocaust"? The sepia-toned tomes cluttering the front of every Borders&Noble in the land since the mid-90s--you know the ones.

Avoid them. Don't even think about them, lest you become cruel-mouthed and jaded like me about their ilk.

And while you're avoiding them, read this*. It's one of the great novels that inspired...

I continue to be amazed that at some level I can regard the reading of backlist fiction as professional development.

And probably tax deductible!

margot_dent:
to be honest, i dont love the covers, as no one can do the 'heads quite like the 'heads, obviously. the constantines cover of "thank you for sending me an angel" (which i forgot to post, since i'm dumb) is actually pretty good, though.

Work's been interesting since I started the new gig.

In brief, my title is Assistant Category Manager of Fiction, and that entails allocating the goods picked up by the buyers and, though I haven't touched on this yet, digging up all kinds of intriguing data that'll allow me to realize my wish of Canada having the world's hippest chain of corporate bookstores. Basically, I'm in...

Because nobody ever gets my space herpes references.

3 weeks and I have only this to report: Soul Asylum is a better band than they were ever given credit for, mainly because when they were good Husker Du and The Replacements were also good and in the same vicinity and there just wasn't enough credit in the 80s punk rock economy to spare any for poor little Soul Asylum. And Dave Pirner had...

I am also impressed with your being able to learn all of that record. My ear really sucks and I can only pick up the simplest of riffs n stuff.

Bonus paid out today. Rather than piss it away gradually over several months of meagre extravagance I purged my urge to splurge (and rhyme) all on the way home.

Witness:

  • One perfect pair of shoes

  • One perfect pair of headphones

  • One perfect album

  • And the best, cheapest, gyro in the city, right around the corner from home

Everything was so on sale it was ridiculous....

Last year, in exchange for some money to help me move, an anonymous member asked me to draw a picture for you. I finally have it. If you're uncomfortable with me mailing it to you, I could scan it for you or something. Let me know.

These must be the grandchildren of those who mocked Darwin for saying "we're related to monkeys." Pity their poor families, as they pass on in perpetuity a truncated getthepoint gene and possibly also the toostupidtocomprehenditanyway gene, which apparently is dominant and also enhances fertility.

Wait a sec. What are the odds of there actually being bloodlines from one mob to the other? And if they've...

It certainly gives some credence to Dawkins' theory about the life of memes- the most pitched battle comes when they're on the edge of extinction.

Oh, White Blood Cells... you would finally show up below the $25 price point at a time when I'm trying to be very, very good about money, wouldn't you? You're a naughty little album. And who's your friend? Elephant? And I could take the both of you home for a mere twenty-five of my strange Canadian dollars?

Damn you! I will resist your siren song (specifically, "Fell in love with a girl") this day, but one day soon, you will be mine.

Oh yes, you will be mine.

42 degrees* with the humidex.

Windows open. Fans on. A/C dormant.

Hey, summer.

Bring it.

*New Delhi was about the same today.

UPDATE:

Summer brought it, and has kept bringing it. The humidex is now 39 and our resolve, faced with the threat of a sleepless night, has cracked. Our faith is now in that courageous little grey box humming in the window.

Hey, thanks. I think you're the only person who read/got my piece. confused

Meanwhile, it's raining in NYC like end times. Frogs from the skies, rivers turning red. If the sun ever comes out again, my garden is going to be insane!

Is the new one GSM? I actually just found a few old Startac GSM where you could just move the SIM card depending on mood and proximity to dad. Just like changing neckties. I actually can't believe the number of old mobiles on ebay all embellished with rare! retro! cool! I smell a trend.

Edit: nevermind that one, 900Mhz only, so no canada.

Nearing the end of The First Forty-Nine, wondering if I want to go on past "Fathers and Sons" to the rest. They sat on the shelf long enough since being flirted with briefly as an undergrad so I started pecking somewhere around my birthday in response to a gut feeling that told me I was nearing have arrived at long since passed the end...

It baffles me that Hemingway is held up as the badass, world-weary, tough guy literary persona par excellence when we have so many other people who write better about similar subjects- Cormac McCarthy, for example.

Thanks; I'll check it out.

Coincidentally, I watched The Goonies last night, and the DVD had the video for "Good Enough" in the "extras" section. Captain Lou Albano and Corey Feldman, all in one video? Genius.

This afternoon at work: a short, genial chat about money, and why I'll soon see a big wad of it just for being the special snowflake that I am.

Not much else to write about.

Chickie's having a bath. Might see what's going on there.

I liked the part where he's screwing his employer's servants, significantly expanding my understanding of perquisites. Now I feel sad for you, just getting wads of cash in paper bags.
