McEwan's The Child in Time was good, not great. Feels like the type of book that appeals only to writers, and even then only on limited terms. Slightly overbearing structure and not much sense of wonder in the unfolding. Wondering if McEwan's not all I had him cracked up to be. Still, the first 30 pages was highly engaging. I should bug Random House for...

That (dog v. squirrel) is especially hilarious to me as I imagine that is exactly how it would go down if Bruno ever got his mouth on one. He's been lusting after them for so long through the front window, I think it would be much like if a 14-year-old me were to suddenly find myself making out with Yasmeen Bleeth.

The first few months of this year saw the two biggest sophomore-hipster-boner-releases I can remember ...

The Arcade Fire: 8/10 I like it.
Clap Your Hands Say Yearh: 4/10 c'mon guys .. you're not there yet.

Reading What is the What by Dave Eggers. It is in all ways excellent. It's being called a novel, though it's really a freely fictionalized autobiography of Valentino Achak Deng, one of Sudan's Lost Boys and a friend of Eggers. Not sure why Deng isn't credited as at least co-author, but I have to assume the reason's acceptable to both parties as it's Deng's likeness...

Primer = good, X Men = bad.
So say we all.

Despite my best efforts in the matter, I've not seen Primer. I've been avoiding X3.

What is the What was indeed excellent.

Reading The Omnivore's Dilemma.

Remind me not to eat ever again, alright?

I don't think you've even welcomed me to Toronto yet, jerkface. biggrin

Pencil me in for Friday. My weekends are always a little weird, what with travel back and forth to visit the girl, but I think she's coming here this weekend, and it'd be a hoot to catch up. Let's go to your brewpub of choice. I'm just off the Danforth, which is all kinds of convenient, but I wouldn't know the finest pub from the most base watering hole, so I'll happily head somewhere with a recommendation.

Came home from work and couldn't stop thinking about work. About the 3 days' worth of work I need to get done tomorrow morning. About the possibility of not taking Friday as a vacation day and working through it (though I've still got 8 vacation days to eat before April 1). About not failing. About being set up to fail. About being responsible for the...

Sometimes a glass or nine at the of the day is the most reasonable course of action. Best of luck with this.

Yes, I'm still alive.

I have only this to say: I don't like the new guy editing Salon's audiofile feature. In a review of the new Nora Jones album (I like that they review stuff I'd never buy, because I'll never hear it either and I'd like to have some idea of what I'm missing from time to time) the guy credits the mood and...

I hope the show rocks for you, then, and that you got amazing seats. (For myself, I later realized I would probably not pay $225 for reunion tours that I would like to see more, ie, the Stone Roses or the Smiths).

This would be of interest only to the small handful of New Yorkers on my friendlist but I can't figure out how to start friends-only threads and that suggests to me that it's just as hard to read them so I'm posting this here and hoping a week is long enough for everyone who'd be interested to stop by.

I'll be vacationing in NYC next...

We're heading out to India on December 17th, where I'll be literally monkish for about 3 weeks of a 5 week trip. My memories of India tell me that it's a bad place to have long hair, in terms of keeping it clean, etc. I figured no hair at all would be much preferable.

Nice specs, btw.

If you happen to see me and my new look on the street in the next couple weeks please don't think me rude if I don't say hi. I did not start wearing contacts; rather, the glasses I've worn daily for the past 5 1/2 years snapped at the elbow today when a dog at the park jumped at me. It's not the worst thing...

Statistically speaking, no one buys books. If 10 times as many people read as buy books, then almost nobody reads books either.

A really successful book in Canada sells over 1000 copies per week. If it really catches on it sustains that on average for a year or more. I'm talking The Da Vinci Code here, Life of Pi, The Lovely Bones, A...

I should be heading through Toronto on my way to visit some friends in St. Catherines (I know, weird) on the last weekend of Oct. (26-29) I thought perhaps a coffee and some bookshopping was in order.. Montreal's terrible for second hand English language bookstores.. and I've been to at least a couple great ones in Toronto before.. on Queens I think (near the university) .. let me know if you're free.
lemonkid:
That`s true.. it`s one of the few cities in Canada I haven`t truly explored.

I just remember something about Queen St. (maybe Bloor) and walking around U of T which is where I recall the bookstores being.. as well as perhaps the snobbiest (and therefore to some extent great) video rental place that I`ve ever been to. I spent maybe 24 hours there that time while visiting this gorgeous older women (well not that much older) who had a fantastic giant modern about on the 23rd floor of a high rise near the Old Mill subway station. The only time I`ve been outside of the airport was for Prom and that was a blitzkrieg tour itself.. my learning about Toronto geography was hindred by my lack of a proper map (I usually study one extensively before visiting a new city) and my mind being distracted by other substances and women.. not necessarily in that order. And I had people to drive me around, which of course helps immensely.

I`ll definitely drop you a line closer to the date.. I`m still arranging travel plans at the moment.

Tell Ginny that she is wrong... Leroy doesn't growl when I approach a sleeping Bean. However, Leroy growls when Bean approaches a sleeping me. He stops growling if Bean picks him up, though.

We had a puppy socialization breakthrough today -- Leroy actually jumped up on obd's lap today at our house. Leroy usually growls and barks and runs away from our guests.

Today I ensured that many of the most recognizable classics of literature, new and old alike, including The Call of the Wild, The Age of Innocence, The Crying of Lot 49, The Sound and the Fury, Ulysses, All the Pretty Horses, Portrait of a Lady, Snow Falling on Cedars, Midnight's Children etc., will be stocked forevermore in...

Enough with the politics.

Oh, things were never really that great over there. My enjoyment of the job was based on three main factors. Firstly, most of the people I was working with were really awesome folk. Secondly, I was making good money. Thirdly, and perhaps most importantly, during the early phase of my career there, I was just giddy to have a job in the industry that I sort of turned a blind eye to some of the more unusual aspects of the gig.

I'd been warned on multiple occasions prior to starting with the company that people "didn't want to say anything, but I sort of heard that's not the best place to work". Nobody wanted to say something directly, but everybody seemed to have a cautionary tale or "knew somebody who used to work with somebody". It was kind of mysterious.

Ultimately, with a few brief exceptions, I basically dreaded going in every single day for the past two years of my four year stint with them. I stuck it out for two big reasons - I was working with a bunch of friends, and I needed a certain income level to make my car payments.

I kept a lot of shit bottled up.

We should really go have a beer one night. biggrin
