Brother sewing machines are quite good- and thats a really good and affordable 'starter' machine. It tends to break often though if it gets heavy use. 
You might want to look into getting a Husqvarna because they are a lot more sturdy. At least I have had better luck with them.
Sewing machines always seem to jam at crutial points--- I think they do it to be mean.
