Thank you guys for the video game insight. I feel enlightened

The Internet is a large, complex beast. You may not know how to manage a Cisco router or code a Java application, but as an end user, you're doing just fine as far as I can see.
Are you into video games? Can you explain the fascination to me?
I've got questions.
1. Do you play video games? (If not, why not?)
2. What are your favorite kinds of games?
3. Name a couple of your favorite games, specifically, and what makes them awesome (if that's not a redundant question).
4. I know there are a lot of video game based...

"1.Do you play video games?
YES.
2. What are your favorite kinds of games?
the violent kind!
BUT I like to be able to control the situation I am in to a certain degree, I don't care for it as much when there's only ONE way to win the game, one path to take.
3. Name a couple of your favorite games, specifically, and what makes them awesome (if that's not a redundant question).
STAR WARS: Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2, Hitman.
Not only is there various ways to play the game/actions to take, you can decide how "good" or "evil" you wish your character to be. So, you can put THOUGHT into it as well as enjoy the action.
I enjoy some more traditional D&D or action/shoot-em-up games like Brute Force, Dungeon Siege and Castlevania as well!
and I played Sonic the Hedgehog a couple times and liked it. And I like oldschool games like Pac-Man and Dig-Dug.
"Can you explain the fascination to me?"
YES. It's like watching a good movie, but YOU get to take PART IN IT!
". I had been reading the Walking Dead comics awhile back. I haven't looked at one in about a year"
GO PICK EM UP! it's still awesome!
I haven't seen the show.
"I liked the cinematic interpretation of this enough to watch it 3 times in the theater "
I didn't care for it. and seem to be the only one! It was EXACTLY like the story.. but I've ALREADY read the story! so what was the point? I'VE ALREADY SEEN IT!
"Gambit"
ughg! he's lame! Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Kitty, and Cyclops for me!
"Phoenix Saga"
CLASSIC.
YES.

1. Do you play video games? PC games only. I don't have a console system.
2. What are your favorite kinds of games? I prefer games with open, expansive worlds to explore, so there is a sense of travel and adventure. Fallout 3 is one of the best, but others have included the Stalker series and even Baldur's Gate. So, I'm not limited to first person perspective in that sense (although I generally don't like third person over the shoulder perspective games - the Witcher being one exception). I've enjoyed some more linear games, like Half-Life 2, which to me plays at a pace comparable to watching a movie. Again, there is a good sense of movement and traveling, despite there only being one way from point A to point B. Another is the Witcher, which had some of the most challenging moral choices to make in any game I've played, and an interesting story and game world. I also enjoy some puzzle games, like Myst. Those usually have some really interesting and creative worlds to see. Regardless of the type, I like the game worlds, situations, and plots to be somewhat plausible, if not realistic. And occasionally, I'm in the mood for a driving game.
3. Name a couple of your favorite games, specifically, and what makes them awesome (if that's not a redundant question). see #2.
4. I know there are a lot of video game based movies (comics too) and I'm wondering how video game lovers find this? Do you go see the film interpretation of a video game you like? Do some video games have such specific stories that it is weird to see a movie stray from it? Do you imagine your characters to be a certain way (I know you have a visual of them) so that casting can make you crazy? I hardly ever watch movies of any kind.
5. Do any of the video game based movies just take the characters and do a whole plot unrelated to the game? I wouldn't know.

Good news to counter the bad news?

Awesome!
I got some really sad news today, about an old, old friend of mine.
I am learning:
You can not save anyone. Salvation is far too personal.
I have to turn in a take-home exam tomorrow, but I might just e-mail it to the prof (to prove it's done), and drop it off Thursday. Maybe I need a little bit of sleep. That will help....

You're right about salvation: all you can do is open the door, the other person still has to choose to go through it. Which doesn't make it any less troubling.
You're the first person I've seen be excited about snow.

Sad, but true.

Today was a write off.
My cat got stuck in a wall.
I think she went in at like 5-6 AM, and I just got her out. What a fiasco! I've been scared all day that I would never see my terrible baby again... but she's back. Exhausting!!

What makes a book worth reading?
I like to read books that contain ideas I've never thought of before.
What makes an author stand out?
Originality. Hard to do these days but really the litmus test for me. It doesn't mean everything about a book has to be totally original but it just has to have a new angle or a new take on something.
Do you prefer particular literary genres?
Science fiction. No other genre explores the borders of human thought in the same way. Also science fiction reflects on the way our society changes and explores possible outcomes of those changes. It's fascinating to read something that was written just twenty years ago and is already completely overtaken by reality.
Do you read poetry? Prose?
Prose. I've still got quite a few volumes of poetry from Eng. Lit. classes of yore in my shelf. But hey have remained unopened ever since.
Are there certain topics that just don't interest you?
Most of them, to be honest. Like celebrities, sports (OK, I watch snooker on the telly occasionally), almost everything that passes for popular entertainment these days, politics (I keep up to date, but most of the time it's just painful to watch the news), the everyday pettiness many people are so preoccupied with, and a lot of other stuff I'm so uninterested in, I can't even name it. And yes, I'm a card-carrying nerd.
By the way, some music tips can be found in my latest blog entry.
