For me, it has always been Charmander. In fact, I ALWAYS choose the fire starter for every Pokémon game and I'll tell you why!

As someone who has completed all the earlier Pokémon games several times, sometimes playing feels too easy! Choosing the fire type first gives the game that bit more of a challenge considering the first 2 gyms are Rock and Water Pokémon...
