One of my all-time favourite quotes:
"I believe I know the only cure, which is to make one's centre of life inside of one's self, not selfishly or excludingly, but with a kind of unassailable serenity -- to decorate one's inner house so richly that one is content there, glad to welcome any one who wants to come and stay, but happy all the same...

I'm becoming overwhelmed by stuff. I have too much stuff, and I don't know where it all came from. It's becoming a burden.
I admit I'm responsible for some of it. I convince myself that I really need that PCMCIA-to-USB bridge, that life will not be complete without the portable MP3 player, and that dignity demands a combination printer/scanner/photocopier. Books cause trouble. They cry...

totally I think the lack of music is super-freeing- It adds a lot of the sort of zen, enptiness factor, which I think leaves space for creation...
I suck at dances where you have to be in time with the rhythem, even in capoeirsa you're only loosly going with the music.

I've tried a few different kinds of tea recently: Keemun, Assam, Darjeeling, Iron Goddess of Mercy... and liked them all. I didn't like them all equally, but I liked them. So far so good. (I didn't like Earl Gray, but I figured that was the bergamot oil, not the tea.)
But I began to worry. What if I like all teas? Do I have...

If you want to try a tea that'll knock your socks off, try Shou Mei. It's a Chinese white tea that has a very subtle flavor. What kind of tea is the Iron Goddess of Mercy?
Where do you buy your tea? I can only find loose leaf tea in chinatown here in Boston.

So where can I catch some big salmon in Canada? I live in Alaska and about the only salmonid research ive done is different ways to cook them. I'll be that way in April through June. Maybe I could learn more about Salmon. Take care. Laters.
Happy New Year, eh?
I'd appreciate it if you could all stop being so interesting for a few months. I'm trying to concentrate, dammit. Thanks in advance.

Vancouver Island...well the parts i saw this summer anyway. i was there with my guy for a week...spent 4 days of that hiking on the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail. fell madly in love with it, with Port Renfrew, with Sooke, somewhat with Victoria, and want to go back again this year. i'd never been to the coast, let alone the coastal rainforest and i feel like i left a part of me behind when i went away. i have to go back again! i must!
sweet cracker sandwich! another biology geek! i'm currently working after finishing my undergrad honours (on raptor foraging in a fragmented landscape - sounds more exciting than it was). i'm doing a lot of PR work for a land stewardship program aimed at retaining habitat for Burrowing Owls and Loggerhead Shrikes. great programs, but some days i'm scared to death of people, so it's definitely not my dream job. it does pay the bills though, so it's alright for now. i plan to do my masters in the next two years however, hoping to focus on the american badger. i'd love to go somewhere in BC and do work, particularly the coast, but at this point in time my roots are here and i'm not wanting to rip them up. tell me more about salmonid evolution and were you at the Leading Edge conference in Victoria this summer?

Isolation is a funny thing.
I spent a month with (almost) no company other than a cat (did I mention that I'm not really a "cat person"?), and loved it. People keep asking me, "How could you survive a month without other people? Didn't it drive you crazy?"
Well......... no. I loved it. Coming back to "civilization" may yet drive me crazy, though.
I know...

i was shocked and amazed to see your name back on my page.
any more stories of this amazing time alone? i often fantasize about telling everyone to fuck the hell off and leave me alone, but i know that would never happen.
what was it like, on a daily basis?

It appears that I have returned from a month in splendid isolation in the back-woods of British Columbia. Glad to be back in SG, although I can't honestly say I'm glad to be back in "civilization" in general. It appears that humanity has not improved its nature overall while I was gone, alas (based on reading the news WWW sites, etc).
Maybe on my next...

Well, I'm out of here for a while... on a trip during which I will not be "connected". I'll sign up again when I get back, most likely. Cheers, and it's been fun

We *are* serious about Ruth Lysistrata (the first name after a grandmother and the SC Justice). At least we're not thinking of saddling a kid with Lysistrata as a first name. She can be hipster and go by "Liz, spelled L-Y-S."
Sorry, can't be any help on the Wharton ref.
