Friction
Michael Fraiser was an everyday high school kid on Earth-R (Russell's Earth, circa early-1990's for superhero games). He was into superheroes, karate, and Saturday morning cartoons. He was planning on becoming a karate-chopping vigilante upon his graduations, although his factory-working father tried several times to get him to consider more realistic pursuits; or even get a girlfriend or sumpthin'. Michael's heart was set on becoming the next terror of the alleyways when one day he was involved in a bad car crash coming home from school. The crash was a set-up by the I-MAX corporation, and all of the teens involved were body-snatched from the firey pile-up by paid-off 'rescue workers'. The parents of each teen were told that their childs body was unrecognizable, and closed-casket funerals were held for all.
Back at the I-Max bases, Michaels body was found still usable for the cybernetics research, and the I-MAX scientists went about using his young frame as the chassis for a speedster-cyborg. As mad scientists are wont to do in the case of super-hero origins, they decided to put in the control chips last. Michael broke free the second he was brought back to consciousness, and escaped the science facility. He spent the next several weeks adjusting to his new life, seeking out local super-heroes to tell him what the hell just happened (and learning of I-MAXs involvement and shady dealings). He was disappointed a bit that he wouldn't be a vigilante after all, but positively thrilled that his cyborg body was so much more powerful than he had imagined. He incorporates his knowledge of karate into his speedster-strikes, eventually fine-tuning them into a vibrational attack that can cut through most armors like butter.
Michael took on the name Friction, and joined a new super-team based out of New York City. The team only had two missions, and never received an official name. During his time he developed a rapport with Tommy Kramer, a 'flying brick' super who tried his best to avoid any silly super-hero trappings. This contrasted with Friction, who absolutely LOVED being a super-hero. On his first mission with the team, he fought the Incredible Hulk-like 'Billy', an overpowered goat-mutant who was on the rampage after being tricked by an aspect of death. It was here that Micheal became obsessed with taking the brick down on his own, because his bad-ass virbrostrike could barely hurt the guy. On his second mission with the team, he stopped a demonic brick from causing a meltdown at a nuclear power plant. Afterward, he wrote a very hasty letter to the mayor of NYC for leaving a nuclear reactor unguarded with super-villains running amok ("I don't mind knocking a few demons around in an old neighborhood that's scheduled for demolition anyway, but you're telling me you don't even have a few power-suits guards at the nuclear power plant? C'mon, really? We could have used some back up there!").
