People sometimes ask me "Why are you always thinking about worker's rights? It isn't that bad here."Let me explain what happened where I work today and you decide.
One of the employees drove a forklift into a natural gas pipe that runs through the warehouse I work in and broke it.He didn't realise what had happened at first and continued on.About half an hour later he starts to wonder why it smelt so funky in the area he works so he get's the floor manager and they discover what had happened. Our floor manager isn't the most take charge kind of guy so he goes to tell the owner.
The owner decides to look around and see for himself if he can fix it,he can't,so he shuts the pipe off and opens the bay doors to let the gas ,which has been building up for an hour now, to escape.
Finally he calls a repairman from the gas company in to take a look at it.When the repairman looks at the pipe he finds that the gas hadn't been completly turned off, just enough to make the hissing inaudible to an eighty year old man. When the repairman points out that we should have all been evacuated from the building the owner lays into him telling him it would cost him to much money to be shut down over something as trivial as a gas leak.
Never mind the fact that if the gas had ignited there would be no warehouse anymore.
This took place in the morning,I found out this afternoon.I got a feeling that our owner may be looking at a legal shitstorm after the holidays from the city, fire department, surrounding buisnesses and labour relations.
Good.
I don't give a shit about my job if this kind of situation is allowed to happen again. What good is a job if it kills you.
