I'm filled with mixed emotions today as I get ready to board an airplane heading towards Iraq. The last time I was there in 2004, it was under some very different circumstances, I was there fighting back the same insurgents that now have control of Mosul. Yet this time, I'm not part of the fighting forces but part of the group helping the refugees that are fleeing for their lives. It's been 10 years but it feels like I was just there dodging IEDs and incoming mortar rounds and now I am going back without the body armor and weapons yet just as determined to make a difference.
