Alright, a bit of context first. So, I'm a Mexican American living in a border city. I grew up in the US, and have never been to Mexico. Which means, I don't speak any Spanish. This makes people here angry. Which in turn, made me refuse to learn. I've pushed away my people's culture because border city Mexicans are very different from actual Mexicans. I learned this as I got older, and I regret that I pushed so hard against my culture.

I also grew up thinking that I hated Mexican food. Not because of the city I live in, but because my mother can't cook for shit. I had no idea what good Mexican food tasted like outside of my grandma's cooking, which we didn't get often enough to change my mind.

But over the last few years, I've had to try to make different Mexican dishes because the family likes it. And I've learned that I actually do enjoy it, when it's cooked right. At least, as 'right' as a very American Mexican can manage. I have a pretty good recipe for picadillo (gotta live the internet for that), of course there's the standard tacos. And my least favorite to make, enchiladas. It's only my least favorite because frying the tortillas is a pain in ass. I get hot grease splatters launching at me with increasing anger as I go. Which makes it very violent by the end, since I'm cooking for 8 people. The grease hits my arm, my face... basically everything not covered by clothes.

Still, it's worth it when the whole family gathers around and devours dinner. I'm not joking, I made 30 enchiladas, beans, and salad. It's all gone.

Anyway, I was just thinking about this while cooking, and decided to share with you all. Dinner anyone?
