A few months back I lost my job. Searching for a job that would cover my bills turned out to be a more daunting task that I had expected but I found something about three weeks ago and it working out okay so far. (crosses fingers)
When you don't have to go to work every day it's way too easy to just sleep in every day until your body finally rebels and forces you up. Kind of like when you leave a battery on the charger too long, the body can be over energized. I was having trouble falling asleep but would then sleep for 10-12 hours at a stretch. This led to issues in other areas and I started to get a little depressed. Thankfully, I got my head on straight and all that is out of the way for now.
The singer for my band, Ben, told us that he was going to step down and he played his last show with us two days after I got downsized. It was a pretty way to start the weekend. (It ended up pretty great because my girl and I took off camping on my motorcycle for two days but that's not relevant.) So here we are, three months down the road and the singer wants back in the band. The truth is, while we all want him back in the band, I think we've all come to the conclusion that we're better off without his voice. Mike, the guitarist, and myself split up the singing duties and gave one song to our drummer. We don't have as much character in our voices as he does, but we can hit the right notes every time. That counts for a lot.
On the other hand, the whole reason I love my band so much is the guys in it, not the amazing music we make together. Truth be told, our music isn't that remarkable and we sound like a whole bunch of other bands that are out there. He's coming back and we're all excited about that, for better or worse. He's not going to step back into his old shoes; I'm keeping two of the songs that he used to sing and the two that I always sang. Mike is keeping a couple he really likes and sings well too. We're going to figure out how to split the songs so that Ben is more of an emcee or something...heavy on the or something.
We'll figure it out. I seem to be figuring out a lot of things lately.
My girl is done with school, done with taking the bar exam and is going away to Spain for six weeks on 8/20. I hope I don't get callouses. I'll just work more and write more music to keep myself occupied.
We're playing with The Mighty Regis on 8/27. That should be cool, they're a good band. I'm a little bit nervous; I kinda suck at mandolin compared to people who know what they are doing. Balls to the wall, fake it til you make it!
