over the 4 day holiday weekend the company, i try not to work for, had a new $600,000 cutoff knife system installed. upper management was under the impression that the new computer sysytem with said knife would mesh seamlessly with our other system that was 18 YEARS OLD.
needless to say, chaos ensued. at the start of my shift they said "ok , let's run it!" i replied " hey, the only training i have had on this new system is 5 minute look at a mock-up program two weeks ago" then i started quoting verbatem the company saftey policy on how each employee was to be properly trained on all equipment that they have to work with.
after some "umm , ahhh... well the tech guys are here to show you how it works as we run it" grrrrrrrr.....
so i started the machine. a few seconds later the plant manager walked over to me and personally assured me i would get all the proper training i needed. mind you, while we were on the run. so, i got a 5 minute crashcourse on how the system works. that was great until the techs realized that eveything was resetting to defaults ( which we canot run with..) and they had no idea as to why. so it was 8 hours of befuddled tech guys arguing amongst thenselvs as how to correct the problems, now THAT was reassuring, and my crew and i picking up the scrap the machine/techs were making.
now sitting next to me as i write this is my six new best friends:
rolling, rolling,rolling rock!

Sales rep to upper brass: "Of course it'll work with your current system. After all, we build backwards compatibility into every piece of equipment we sell!"
*handshakes exchanged*
