So went the cinema yesterday, and this what I thought of what I watched -

Bolt

Usually CGI celebrity voiced talking animal movies come under the banner "I don't have small children, so why the fuck would I have to watch that?". However this one is in 3D, I'd probably watch a movie of my parents fucking if it was in 3D. I love 3D.

Bolt was quite the suprise though. Disney has clearly been spying on Pixar because its delivered a film that can be positively compared to its sister companies output. The story is a combination of The Truman Show and Homeward Bound, and its message is lifted from a multitude of other films. All very safe stuff, but well written and executed. There's nothing lazy about this film, instead of pop culture references masquerading as jokes theres actual jokes.

As with Pixar movies there is an emotional core to the movie. Sure its easy to draw empathy from the audience by having a little girl loose her beloved dog. But it works, and elevates it above the crap Dreamworks/Fox shovel out.

I also have to mention the opening 10 -15 minutes which are from the actual "Bolt" TV show because its fantastic. And also the Pixar produced short before the movie were Mater from "Cars" narrates his time as a drift racer in Japan.

Sequel please Disney.

Punisher: War Zone

I refuse to believe anyone over the age of 13 had anything to do with this movie. Thats not a critism because this is an extremely enjoyable movie, just one born out of mind that thinks exploding heads are the coolest thing ever. What has clearly happened here is that someone has read some recent Punisher comics, but forgotten that the excessive violence in them will not cross over to the cinema. It works in movies like Saving Private Ryan because its handled by a competent director, not a bunch of 13 year olds.

The core problem within Punisher: War Zone is that its tonally all wrong. It was probably supposed to be a violent thriller, instead its comedy gold. You just can't have serious film were the villain struts around like he's in Saturday Night Fever.

I'll give credit to the 13 year olds behind its creation, this isn't dull movie. Its utter shit but you'll love it. The only thing that breaks my theory that early teens made it is that there's no tits. They probably just got to embarrassed ask any of the actresses to wap 'em out though. A missed opportunity seeing as Julie Benz is in it.

And on that sexist note I'll take my leave.
