After watching "The Dark Knight" I was reminded of story regarding Jerry Lee Lewis. Lewis was doing a gig at the Brooklyn Paramount along with Chuck Berry and Little Richard. Berry and Lewis fought for last billing, eventually the organisers went with Chuck. This upset Lewis a bit, well a lot actually. So much he closed with a literally incendiary version of "Great Balls of Fire", I say literally cos the mad bastard actually set fire to his piano as a climax. The crowd went fucking insane this display of pure rock n roll. Seeing Berry backstage with the mental crowd still screaming and hollering Lewis calmly said to Berry "Follow that nigger".

Chris Nolan probably wouldn't put it in such a horribly racist way, but he has laid down the same challenge.

There's more, but its spoilerised incase you've not managed to get to Magic Lantern Emporium yet

SPOILERS! (Click to view)

Much has been said about Heath Ledger in "The Dark Knight", and I'm going to add to it. His Joker is fucking terrifying, the Batman (and Gotham) aren't dealing with Nicholson's panto villian. He's force of evil nature, and he has a plan. The Joker may say he's just an agent of chaos, but its a lie. He's there to show us all we're just one misplaced step on our way to the dark side. And he's the one to show us the route to that path.

At the end of the movie Batman and Gordon cover up Dent's death so the Joker hasn't won. He has though, unlike most Hollywood films equilibrium has not been attained. The Jokers actions have made everything worse. Good people have died, good people have turned into monsters and people with all the right intentions are now fugitives. The old world of honour amongst thieves has been lost. At the end of "The Dark Knight" there is chaos. The Joker hasn't won? I beg to differ.

To me that's what is so interesting about the movie. It's "Chinatown", there's a resolution but its not one anybody is happy with. The difference is this is a huge budget blockbuster, does no one else think thats a huge fucking gamble? One thats paid off though as "The Dark Knight" has cleaned up, and will probably be the biggest grossing film of the year.

I'd like to think it is because this is an excellent film, and not because of a high profile death and a fantastic promo campaign.

What I'm really wondering is what will happen when Nolan and his creative team have to answer the very challenge they have laid down. "Follow that", I can't wait to see them try.

I hear the X-Files movie sucks, despite being a lapsed Xphile I'm a bit disappointed. There's a gap out there for scary stories and the TV show excelled at that. The exploits of Mulder and Scully fits that hole, and its a real shame they might of fucked it up. Still the movie was really cheap, so if it breaks even maybe they can have another go. Depends if anyone cares enough I guess.

Here's a bit Youtube to play me out. Kevin Smith and Star Wars, as apposed to Kevin Smith writing about Star Wars.
