well, here I am. back in the States and for good....or at least a good while.
Flew back in from Kuwait a few days ago via Frankfurt and Bangor, Maine and into California. I'm not yet home, but I am much closer than I've been in more than half a year. Same continient at least. Same country. I'm still out in the desert, the Mojave. I'll be out here for another week doing administrative type nonsense before I go back to Texas. It feels really strange to be back. To be honest it's going in stages and maybe that's a good thing. I'm still on active duty in a deserty living in a squad bay with 30 other guys, though we've put away our body armor and assault rifles, grenades, machine guns, bayonets, and other implements of human destruction.
Even when I get back to Texas I'll still remain on active with relativly easy office work until the end of my contract in May so I can secure better college benefits. Then I'll jet off to SF for the prom. and from thence a lot of my own time. traveling in Texas and eventually Europe again.
the reconnections...picking up where I left off...using a cell phone, going to a resturaunt, just dealing with people who aren't in the situation I was in only a few weeks ago...it's...not difficult...just strange. I'm not sure of myself it some situations. I guess that's not unusual either. I cannot explain it because I don't think this thing is entirely rational.
I'm not looking forward to the circus. When I get home there is to be banner waving and jubilation and what not. At some point I am going to have to go and stand in a formation while the governer of Texas tells me what a good job I did. I came [-] this close to telling the battalion commander to fuck off when he did the same thing in a formation the other day. it's not that I don't appreciate it...I dunno. it's different when I hear it from friends and family...but even that is hard to get used to.
at this point I want some good whiskey (there's a bottle of Knob Creek small batch hiding in my locker), my motorcycle(s), a place of my own (I need to find an apartment when I get back to Austin), and more than a modicum of sex.
and I want to spend time with my friends and travel.
