ok writing here from a bighuge public library in Phoenix.
I was so wired and excited that I decided to get ahead of schedule and I drove straight through from San Antonio to the Saguaro National Park outside of Tucson, AZ ....about 1200 miles. I took I-90 through Texas rather than the busier I-10 and it turned out awesome! drove closer to the border and through deserts and mountains rather than along a highway corrider of truck stops and fast food billboards. I actually drove almost three hours without seeing another vehicle once. it was bliss.....flying down the highway at a respectable 85mph..(quite respectable or a Ford Aspire...my poor car is being such a good sport about this abuse) through canyons and tiny one light towns....through this one mountain pass at 3am all switchbacks and turns and then zooooooooooooom straightaway across a desert valley floor all downhill. I hit no rabbits for which I am happy. and I ams sure that they are too.
Finally stopped at Saguaro for two nights....had to leave the car and hike 7 miles in and 5,000 feet up the mountain to my campsite. that hike nearly broke me. didn't figure on the elevation and had just enough water to last the two days...but the sense of satisfaction at reachig my camp and setting up and eating cold soup right from the can was enormous!
then drove up here to Phoenix to spend two nights in a lovely lil hostel before i go a campng again in GLen Canyon, UT... so all is well. I am having so much fun it should be illegal!
hope all is well wif all of you too!
