Been a loooooooong weekend. Got up to Austin so late Thursday night that it was actually Friday morning. so, I missed Maggie's B-day party.
did not make for a happy volkov.
I slept for about 3 hours and then headed to Camp Mabry to start my drill weekend. We bussed BACK down to San Antonio (from whence I had just driven up) to use the rifle range at the base down there.
This weekend was our annual rifle qualification that's required of all us Marine types. We spent Friday afternoon just getting our individual rifles adjusted to thier individual users. pretty easy day out on the range....lots of sun.
it got cold that night, but we were afforded more civilized accomodations than we normally get for drill. we actually slept...INSIDE! :eep: in a semi-permanant dwelling, known as a "hooch".
it got chilly but wrapped up in my ranger roll I kept warm enough to sleep.
Saturday we went out to the range and ran a practice round for the qual. another nice day...lots of sun.
we were supposed to spend saturday also doing the actual qual...but we ran out of daylight....so...back to the hooch! we goofed about and pretended to have classes. I had a turn of ammo watch....can't just leave a couple thousand rounds of ammo laying about without someone watching it. then back out on the range before dawn to shoot the actual qual.
I did pretty good. I've always managed to qualify but never done spectacularly. partly because I don't even carry an M-16 as my weapon but rather it's heftier big brother machine gun version. which is very different to fire...
but this time I took a "fuck it" attitude and ended up missing the highest level by just one shot. that kind of got me, but I couldn't complain. it was definitly an approvement. not many people other than Marines would think any of this is important...but your rifle score is an integral part of being a Marine....even though my SAW is still better.
and it was a beautiful day...lots of sun...
oh by the way
I AM FREAKIN' SUNBURNT! good ol' Marine tan. my head and neck and hands look like they just came out of a kiln...the rest of me is uniformly pale and pasty. ugh.
and now I am home...and now I am tired....and now...mayhap...I sleep.
