good weekend. Working until about 2am Saturday got me off of work for the rest of the weekend. Met up with friends at the river and did a laaaaazy float down the river. good motorcycle ride down to the river and then a long lazy float down.
my friends brought their two dogs and that was a blast. they even had these little doggie floatation... Read More
I'm off to Knoxville to see my dr. friend that's doing his internship up there...poor fella's homesick and stressed out. I figure it'll be a good mini-vacation.
I really want to travel more. Now that I'm working again I'm going to save as much as I can so I can get out there. Thank goodness for airtran! International travel will have to wait until I have more time, but I want to see New York again this year, in addition to New Orleans, Memphis, and Chicago. I love road trips but these days that's not exactly the best idea.
went to dentist. just home. slowly getting the feeling back to my face. $500 to get this fixed, if my insurance will cover the broken crown replacement.
ugh.
in the last four years, I've had to have two crowns...okay now three...and three fillings that the Navy did on my while in Marine Corps bootcamp redone. it's ridiculous.
I've never had a root canal before, and I'm terrified. I wish Hot Dentist was doing it.
I don't mind getting fillings, but my face always hurts after the novocaine wears off. I'm usually okay with ibuprofen, but they give me Vicodin anyway.
Luckily, I've only needed two fillings, ever, and now this stupid root canal. It's enough to make me paranoid. I'm tempted to kick even the occasional diet soda and start using mouthwash twice per day in addition to extra flossing.
It's only Monday morning and I already have a 28 hour work week finished!
sign I need to slow down: I was working in a hot, cramped attic yesterday. I took out my thermometer...136 degrees in the attic. was up there most of the day. the old lady whose air conditioning I was trying to fix took pity and brought me a glass of ice... Read More
136 degrees? Probably crawling around in itchy insulation? Eek! I was just watching the news and they were talking about how many people are dying from heat stroke down there. Keep cool, sorry about your tooth.
i think you're probably right. it's my own self-centered snobbery in a way, that i forget that the majority of people don't think like me (no offense to the masses), and i don't realize that there are people who actually do need to be reminded of these atrocities. it's definitely true that people have become apathetic, but you're right that it's a far cry from genocide. perhaps as a result of my warped view of society, i'm reminded of the holocaust on a weekly basis, and frankly, i think it's hard for me to watch commercials like this because they're almost too real. also, and this may again be a result of my own cynicism, i don't know if the mtv audience can appreciate that kind of commercial. if you're sitting at home watching "next" or "room raiders", i don't know if a counter-culture ad like this will have any influence. then again, perhaps these are exactly the kind of people who need to be influenced. i actually think the commercial (in the house) is very powerful, but i think it would have a much larger impact outside of the mtv environment.
it's 1:20am. I just got home from work. except that I am heading right back out again. probably be done for the day around 4am. my day started at 7am yesterday. and I get to do this all over again on Wednesday/Thursday.
Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.
if you feel like coming back to Baghdad as a contractor, let me know. your military exp coupled with your HVAC knowledge would be perfect as a deployed HVAC tech. HVAC is a big business here and there's always guys fixing those things. you should see the HVAC we have running into the Perfume Palace...units as big as houses. Camp Slayer isn't so bad...we have (polluted) lakes, palm trees and lots of random buildings we've taken over for work, etc. i actually live in a "hard stand" building rather than one of the trailers the rest of the civs live in. as a rule, i work 6/12s and a little more sometimes. you'd probably be on 7/12s.
i'm a Guardsman and did all my drills up front for FY '08 before leaving. you could maybe do the same.
that is, if you WANT to be in a place with very little to do besides work and workout and sleep. i guess you know the drill, tho.
there's always the vacations, too. i plan on doing 4 while i'm here, of which Rome is the first. i looked into Romania a bit. wanted to go see Vlad's castle, Merry Cemetery, etc. mayhaps that'll be trip number three.
that was FAST! New camera is here less than 48 hours after I ordered it. AWESOME. (if you missed my last enty, my point and shoot got stolen at work, so I bought a new 10mp Olympus digital SLR to replace it. )
this thing is great. I am sitting here staring at it with that "where have you been all my life, shweeheahrt" look.... Read More
i never really meant to come back, but seeing as how there's shit else to do in Iraq besides work...
i think we'll make it to Pompeii. other than that i'll probably just stay in Rome for the first go around. my company promises me a job in Germany if i complete this 365 in Baghdad. i'm sure i'll have plenty of traveling options then.
I've been working on a lot of interesting houses lately, design-wise. And I've been wanting to take more photos so that I can keep my hand in even when I didn't really have time for photo taking excursions. So, I took my camera with me to work today. Just a little Olympus 6mp point and shoot.
figure it's time for a new post. nothing much going on though. just lots of work. which is good in that I can work my ass off to save up for some traveling later on down the...road. ehr.
anyway...someone told me that they didn't believe me when I joke that I am a total magazine whore/addict.
so...here's the list.
