When I was about 17 or 18, I went to this lake in southern New Mexico with my girlfriend at the time and her family. It was a trying time, at best. She was one of the most taxing individuals I've ever had to deal with, her mother was almost as taxing, and their relationship was less than ideal, which lead to a lot of bickering and awkward silences and all that happy-good-time family bullshit. And I was stuck with it for 3 whole days.
Anyway.
We went out water-skiing, my first and to date only time. I wasn't very good, and everyone kept making fun of me.On the plus side, we were listening to Soundgarden's "Superunkown," which I somehow managed to snag at a bait shop earlier that day. One thing led to another, and the motor conked out. For some reason, I found myself still in the water holding on to a rope as we were towed to the nearest dock, which happened to be in the middle of the fucking marina. I let go for a sec, and the boat just slid out of reach. There I was, in the middle of all these fucking boats with no one really paying attention to the fact that there was some random dude swimming trough the marina. I eventually caught up with the boat, but no one even knew what had happened. I didn't really say anything about it, seeing as how the girl and her mother were having a little spat. I just sat there, drank my soda and dried off.
The rest of the trip didn't get any better. And come to think of it, I think I cut my foot the first night we were there on a submurged tree stump. We were going to go skinny-dipping.
That trip sucked. Don't go to Elephant Butte, if you can help it.

Look on the bright side man, at least living on the west side of the Atlantic you never experienced the full horror of being dragged off to Morecambe for your summer hols.
