I think you're on the right track. You commented where you thought you were learning and I agreed with it all. It's hard to criticize anyone's work because you're never quite sure what they are going for - like me for instance - when I see photographs I like to see hard contrast photos. I also like black and white a lot for the obvious reason stated above.
If I were to give you one word of advice... Get in there - get closer - and show me some people up close and personal. There is a lot to be said for a close up - and not necessarily just the face. I want to see you cut out some of the beautiful scenery and show me your subject for who and what they truly are.
