Several things that make men violent:

1. A physically or sexually abusive father.
2. Fighting in a real war, like Viet Nam or Desert Storm.
3. Feelings of isolation and low self-concept.
4. A level of powerlessness in their lives, which turns into frustration and rage.
5. Racism, homophobia, anti-islamic feelings, anti-semitism, etc.
6. The modern way the networks televise every modern war, making us see war as an everyday occurance.
7. The new ultra violent X-BOX games that men play with each other on the internet. These new "warriors" learn how to wage war, how to "kill the enemy", how to blow things up, and it is all a "game".

So, a 23 year old man can buy a 9 mm gun 5 weeks ago, and a 22 cal. pistol a few days ago, and knows to buy several of the extra large clips that hold twenty shots each, and knows to buy the correct kind of bullets, a lot of them. This modern warrior has been exposed to #'s 1,3,4,5,6,and 7. Thus he can dress in a heavy coat that has enough pockets to hold the two pistols, four loaded clips, and extra ammunition. He can walk into the dorm and argue with his girl friend and then when the R.A. arrives shoot both of them from a close range. He can then put the pistols back in his coat and walk out of the dorm. Then two hours later he can go into one of the classroom buildings, lock the front doors with a chain and lock, and methodically kill 30 students and faculty. This type of warrior did not exist before Viet Nam. This type of warrior is a potential danger to people like you and me anywhere we go in this world. Because guns are easily available, ammunition is easy to get, and these guys know how to kill innocent people, because in their twisted minds we deserve to die. All of us are capable of taking a convenient weapon at hand (gun, knife, heavy object) and killing someone if sufficiently provoked. But a deliberate mass execution complete with documents and pictures mailed to a major TV network beforehand indicates a seriously ill person. It wouldn't matter if guns and violent video games were available or not - he would have still would have been sufficiently paranoid and angry to wreak havoc on his intended victims.

Statisically we're still much more likely to be killed while riding in our car to Starbucks than getting wiped out by a crazy.

You guys have to see that guns easily available is a major problem. Which western country has the most guns easy available? Which western country has the most shooting per citzen, by far. The messages like that "it's the person not the gun" are of course kept alive by the gun industry who are making big bucks of gun sales.

It's the combination of the points listed by Trix and Tomcat and, then when the person finally snaps, the posibility to hold of a gun easily. Maybe the weapon then would be a knife but it's a hell of a lot harder to create a massacre with a knife.

So now I've got that of my chest. Make love not war love love love
