i have pics from the derby, which kicked so rawkin hard that there is not a smilie rawkin enough to explain it
ill put the pics in my folder when i get off of work, sometime this evening, and hopefully amend this to include some of the finer insights about my hometown and the intense mania that is the state fair

when i was younger i became convinced that the mall and a small bible belt community had somehow reproduced to bring my city the state fair
an ugly child
this year i feel better about it, and times have changed
there are five of us together in line, integrated
an arab, a black chick, some white folks
and the women in front of us in line let their children ask us about our piercings
thats nasty he says, but in a tone that is not urgent, or even really curious
and certainly not cruel
the cops are present but uninterfering
and this year they are not selling beer on the premises
it makes a difference
in the heavily rural white crowd watching the derby no one is rude to us
although they do make a lot of room for us to sit
three mohawks on two heads, six visible shiny silver rings, and all that ethnic mixing
but no one is rude
i watch my friend grin maliciously as she pictures smashing the rednecks that cheated her out of a horse riding trophy years ago with a ruined cadillac
they didnt want a black girl on the books as champion over all the little white ones
but here we are, a decade later
and the world has changed
turning just a little further in to the future
for richmond, that means a lot
the former capitol of the confederacy, a term other cities have forgotten long ago and we still dodge its shadow
but i had a good time friday night
even when somebody told my boyfriend he was wearing the wrong colors in the wrong hood
its okay though
a bandana is easy to take off
unlike some other things, like your skin
or dignity
or history
but hey, here we are
