Aside from a large quantity of nasal goop and lung stuff, I'm back from the land of sickness. I laid low last week and went through several boxes of kleenex and doses of nyquil.
I had a lovely time with surlyclown and his friends at The Magic Castle on Friday night. Surly's friend R is a magician (and stuntwoman, and actress). She invited 11 of us out to do the Houdini Seance. We had splendid dinner party in a private room filled with Houdini memorabilia. At the end of the dinner, a medium came in and performed a seance, summoning the spirit of Houdini and his wife Bessie. It was an absolute hoot.
Surly and I were dressed to the nines. I borrowed an elegant silver necklace, and lovely beaded velvet wrap and handbag from Surly's friend L (to augment the cheap little black dress I bought at Kmart
), and Surly was resplendant and dashing in a suit.
Last night was Tiger Army at the House of Blues. Well, Tiger Army after an afternoon spent buying cds at Amoeba. The show was amazing. Local opener Love Equals Death displayed consummate musicianship and raw energy. Second openers The Street Dogs, from Boston, played a set filled with drinking, fighting and fucking songs, featuring several nods to old school punk. They played a cover of Career Opportunities which made me want to shout with joy. Tiger Army were beyond. Mixing country, psychobilly, and punk, they had the crowd writhing and cheering. Nick 13 made his musical influences obvious by having the curtains open with Hank Williams playing, and later doing covers of Eddie Cochrane and Morrisey. We purchased much swag from all three bands. A grand night was had by all.
Bowling:
I'm sorry I didn't actually get my shit together and organize the bowling thing midweek last week. Surly and I are hoping you can join us to bowl at Lucky Strike this Wednesday (May 25) at 8:30pm. The alley is located on Hollywood at Highland. Check the link for more details.
Don't worry if you can't bowl; it will be a blast just to hang out. I've only ever bowled 5pin, so you'll have company.
