my mom's been telling me all of these crazy stories about her childhood. my mom grew up during the depression and hitchhiked across the country when she was 14, my mom and her guitar. I call her the original hippy, as this was the early 1940s. Something she told me made me realize how different attitudes are now. She said when you were really broke you could generally go into a restaurant and order a cup of hot water. They'd bring it out to you in most cases, seeing you were down on your luck, and you could make poor person's broth, but mixing ketchup in the water. They wouldn't kick you out. Maybe they just felt sorry for my mom.
