Saw the doctor today. It seems the pain in my lower back is being caused by two herniated discs. Those were the result of a major soccer injury on top of 2 years of manual labor.
It seems my only options are surgery (which I've been strongly advised against) and epidural injections of steroid into my spine.

So, today I'm going to meet my father to have lunch. We had a falling-out a while back and haven't spoken in some time. We're supposed to clear the air and start over.
I am not looking forward to this, and have actually been enjoying not having to talk with my parents for a while.
Does this make me a bad person?

Actually, it was surprisingly nice. The first real conversation we've had since June 9, 1995. We were both totally honest with each other without sliding into anger or being purposely hurtful...which is a big step for both of us. We agreed to put aside issues that we'll never agree on and try to find common ground from which to rebuild our relationship.
As a first step, we're going to start a monthly movie / lunch date together. And, for him, I'm going to start visiting my grandparents. For me, he's going to start dropping in to see my kids more often.
You were both right. It was nice and cleansing, and we both still have our space.
Sometimes it is worth having the difficult conversation.
