Nothing sets off your day like a letter from the Royal Bank of Scotland saying they've bounced a direct debit and charged you 38 for the privilege. I read the letter carefully. Union dues? TV licence? What had bounced? Over 3,700 in fees to Edinburgh University ... which I graduated from ... in 1984 ...
I called the bank who said, "Yeah, well, it's a mistake. Or fraud. Or something. We'll cancel that then."
"And the 38?"
"Yeah we'll refund that."
"And check out what happened?"
"Oh no, that's your problem, you have to phone Edinburgh University and see why they've got your bank account details..."
I did. They were very helpful. More helpful than the Royal Bank who obviously gave not an administrative fuck about the fact that:
1. Had I four grand in my account most of it would have disappeared into the coffers of the university, no questions asked...
2. The bank themselves suggested there might be something dodgy about this...
3. The bank's systems for DDs are all automated, so if a weirdly huge and irregular sum vanishes from your account, no one is actually checking so see if it's beyond the normal background noise of your usual transactions ...
And there, a cherry-popping first post on SG about banking administration - which makes me chronologically and chronically middle aged ... yay
PS: it's not 0550 - add six hours for the Caledonian time zone
