Day Out Of The Dead - by Anthony Carpendale + Beki Laws

Review by Matthew Compton:

The undead aren't just mindless ghouls ravening for human flesh you know? Zombies have feelings too, they occasionally need a break from all the head-munching and slaughter to just enjoy life...um, death...or un-life...whatever. That is what this amusing, well-made short would have you believe at any rate.

Beginning with the zombies rising from their graves in typically shambolic fashion the film goes on to show highlights from their distinctly un-zombie-ish day. They take a walk in the park, go to the mall and even manage to hit the pub for a drink and a boogie. What makes this film work so well is the excellent performances from the actors playing our rotting gang of fun-seekers. The make up effects are also first rate. These zombies look and move exactly how zombies should, they stumble around, fall over and all sport that forlorn look of wistfulness that is described so well in Shaun of the Dead, "...like a drunk who's lost a bet". The facial expressions of the zombies are hilarious, more fleeting memories of expression than expression itself. The look of confused betrayal that one zombie gives as a child steals his football and runs off laughing is priceless.

The music is also good and succesfully adds a skew-wiff, other-worldly atmosphere to the film which really complements the shuffling wonky movements of the zombies.

Despite being built around a simple play on the title of Day of the Dead this film is solidly directed with a sense of real character and individuality. What is basically a throw-away gag is brought to life(...death?...whatever) with real flare and talent.

This is a great film which plays an important role in showing that zombies are people too.
