Tonight Sept. 3, at 7:30PM a red Toyota Tundra, license plate 8B64013, hit two dogs at the entrance to Morley Field Disc Golf course on Pershing Dr. The driver did not stop but as a tournament had just ended there were quite a few people in the parking lot and one of the disc golfers who was already in his car followed the truck and got the license plate. The first dog hit was alive after the accident but the second dog died upon impact. The police were called and despite multiple dropped calls (AT&T) let us know that they would send out an animal control officer. After waiting for 30 minutes with the dog in declining condition we contacted VCA Emergency Hospital in Mission Valley on Hotel Circle. They suggested that the best thing to do would be to attempt to bring the dog to them and they would do whatever they could at no charge. We gently put the dog on a board and moved her into the back of my car. She was alive but not moving and had very labored breathing. I arrived at the VCA approximately ten minutes later. I checked on the dog before going in to find what was confirmed two minutes later, that the dog had not survived the trip. The VCA noted that the dog was very young and had just been spaded. They said the next step is that they will see if it has a microchip and attempt to contact the owner. On the way home, approximately 50 minutes after confirming that an officer would be sent to the scene I received a call from an animal control officer. She was lost in Golden Hill and apparently had no idea how to get to Morley Field Disc Golf course and neither did her GPS. I let her know that there was still a dog on the side of the road just south of the parking lot and she said that since it was dead there was no point for her to go and pick it up even though I offered to go meet her and show her where the dog is.
I attempted to record the events as objectively as possible despite how furious I am. The driver of the truck knew that the dogs were hit and attempted to hide his face from the person who followed him. AT&T's horrible service made it very difficult to stay in touch with 911. Animal Control showed no sense of urgency or compassion even though I clearly explained the seriousness of the dog's injuries.
If you know anyone in the North Park area who's dog(s) are missing, please contact the VCA at 619-299-2400. The dog that I took there was a dark gray/black pit bull mix. I did not see the other dog up close but it appeared to be black and white pit bull mix as well. That dog as of now is still by the side of the road.
