This is the kind of conversations I have with girls, especially over the internet. I feel that my social tact is missing something, like a punch line that gets me in her (her being girl I'm interested in) pants.

I've told this to Yuriel countless times. What I've seen in virtually every relationship is that it's actually really easy to nab whichever girl you want. You just have to make them feel special and important. The only difficulty is in finding out exactly how to do that.
Some people feel special and important because they're dating someone that they themselves feel has status some how, be it that they drive a nice car, are extremely attractive, have a big dick, are hilariously funny, or posses some trait they see favorable. An easy way to envision that is they want someone they can brag about, even if it's only to themselves. Others, can actually be quite simple to make them feel special and important. All you have to do is compliment them. Others you'll spend years and years trying to figure it out to no avail.
Again, your excerpt of your conversation quite likely doesn't cover a fraction of what you guys discussed so any analasys on it wouldn't even have a leg to stand on, and you didn't even ask what anyone else's thoughts on it were to begin with, but I thought I'd chime in there.
Long ago I was chatting with this one guy who said something that probably had the biggest impact on my life that anyone else has ever said. He said "Contrary what you see in the movies, in real life girls are more impressed with your sincerity than they are with someone's being funny or amusing." He just spouted that off to the whole of the chat room (this was back in my IRC days so it was like maybe 2001 er something) but still it made me think "Hm, yea why would I have even assumed otherwise anyway? I guess that does explain where I would have gotten that from." Because I did assume that it would be someone's humor or level of amusement that would be what someone would be interested in (which, in hindsight was quite a head slapping realization.) Once I applied that school of thought to my behavior, everything changed.
Whether if it's a good thing or not knowing to apply that school of thought is another subject entirely.
