This past weekend was a weird one. Saturday the girl and I were to go to The Download Festival (Guster, Neko Case, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Modest Mouse, etc.). I was very excited to go see the YYYs. I have heard that Karen O is something to behold. I woke up early made some coffee and went to the back yard with the dog. It was a windy morning and some planters had been knocked down. I bent down to move them and the universe decided to let me know that at 42 you should not do anything until you are fully awake, have stretched and checked your health plan. I felt my lower back contract and the pain froze me on the spot. The dog thought it was a funny game. I fucking pulled my back out!

Here is a picture of my puppy Willow. Any guesses who she is named after?

Anyway, people talk about pulling their backs out and how they were off their feet for weeks on end. I always thought they were being over-dramatic and just downright wimps. But as I felt the sharp pain in my back and tears rolled down my cheeks, I finally got it. For the remaining of the day, I spent my time finding a spot to feel comfortable; sitting down sucked, lying down sucked even more. Of course getting into a car to go to an outdoor concert and watch a bunch of 20 year olds dance and jump around, sounded like the worst idea. So whatever money I spent on this concert, was flushed down the drain. By the way, my local friends are all lame and unless it was tickets for something totally stupid like The Allman Brothers, they would have just looked at me with puzzlement. (Before you say it Skaterpunk444, yes I should have called you but did not think of it...maybe next time)

By the afternoon, I was feeling quite pissed and depressed when I got a call from my friend Scott. Scott has been dealing with a failing kidney and has been waiting for a transplant for a while. He had just received THE call and was on his way to the airport to catch a flight to Atlanta. Yesterday morning he had a transplant and things seem ok. Of course, after that how could I stay mad, depressed, etc, over a stupid pulled muscle. So I made the best of it, pestered the folks on the Silly board, had a drink to Scott and at night had muscle relaxants. Sunday was a repeat with the addition of being able to watch Liverpool being robbed of a win by a blind referee. They have those in England too! I went to work today and was ok, just VERY sore. I plan to be on the bike by the weekend.

By the way, thanks so much to those of you that have donated to my September ride. If you are interested check my August 16th blog.
