Every year I do at least one century bicycle ride. That means 100 miles in one day. Generally, that takes me under six hours. In some ways it is akin to a marathon. Being a sometime runner, I think a marathon is harder. Anyway, usually I participate in a fund raising ride for groups fighting diseases like multiple sclerosis, AIDS or leukemia. This year I was looking for a new ride. After much searching I found the Trail 8-Lighthouse Bike Ride on September 15. The ride visits 8 lighthouses in Southern Maine (around Portland). My girl and I are making into a weekend away. The ride supports the Eastern Trail Alliance, a group working to build nature trails in Maine. I think I may also raise money for something else, but have not decided what.

My training is on target. I rode 53 miles on Saturday. I am increasing my long-rides by 10% each Saturday. I am riding 5 days of the week for a little more of an hour each day (except fot the long ride days of course).

People always make a big deal about how much time I spend on the bike. I love it. I get that "runner's high" that people talk about. I may be achy, but it is a good ache.

Anyone up for a ride?

Here is an old pic of me on a bike. This was taken in December, which explains the long pants. Since then I have gotten a faster bike and a less nerdy looking helmet.
