I'm reading the Heart of the Matter right now and I don't think I should be identifying with scobie so much. but in many ways he seems the classic warrior hero. hmmmm. perhaps a romantic ideal fail when used in real life?

I tell ya maybe I am afraid of becoming one but I really don't like yuppies/yuppiesque. maybe I just don't like middle aged, educated, middle to upper class white people. hmmm. or rather I don't like it when they have no flavor. maybe it is something about people who buy organic but don't compost. people who drive volvos and beamers but ... well thats enough right there.

I am NOT a sucker for this particular well-meaning bad guy. He thinks he's helping to bring about the apocalypse. Crazy! And he treats gay Americans as second-class citizens. And he wants to get rid of abortion rights. And he's fighting a totally unnecessary war "for freedom," even though it clearly isn't. I get so tired of the Orwellian double speak and the feeling like I'm reading Brave New World, but it's not as funny this time because it's real. Sigh...
