It was actually the cnnection between the heater itself and the copper piece that connects it to the pipe in the wall. I don't know what it's called. Anyway, when we got a new water heater last year, the guys didn't change out any of the fittings so that's where it started to leak. Luckily it didn't leak the entire time we were gone, just a day or so. We didn't even bother calling the landlord. It was obvious that a water heater had leaked here before. That and we did a better job repairing it than any of her handymen could. 
The Dalmation is actually our second dog. The puppy isn't even finished growing yet and he's already taller then the Dalmation.
